How to upgrade to Windows 11 on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-19, CF-20, CF-31, CF-33 and CF-53
So Windows 11 is now out and you might be wondering if you can upgrade your Panasonic Toughbook to run it. Of course, the answer is nuanced and will depend on several factors. Basically the newer your Toughbook is, the more likely Windows 11 will be able to run on it.
To see if your Toughbook can upgrade from Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for Updates. If it's available, you'll see this message on the far right. Underneath this message you should see an install option. But hold that trigger finger.!
It is a free upgrade for your Panasonic Toughbook if you currently have Windows 10., this upgrade option will be valid into 2022 according to Microsoft. Assuming you have the right hardware.
We recommend the following hardware for your Panasonic Toughbook to run Windows 11 optimally. This would be: 16GB Ram + 480GB SSD. The minimums that Microsoft suggests are not ideal
The other key feature you must have to run Windows 11 on your Toughbook CF-19, CF-20, CF-31, CF-33, CF-53 and CF-54 will be to have TPM 2.0. Many older Toughbooks will not this or the hardware specs will be inadequate. TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module, and its job is to protect the data used to authenticate the computer. Windows is the most popular operating system in the world and logically this makes it the most attractive one for hackers.
You made need to enable the TPM option in the BIOS of your Toughbook. If you are buying a used Toughbook you must make sure the unit does NOT have a password locking the bios. I suggest asking the seller specifically to be sure before buying it.
The biggest obvious visual difference, is Start Menu and the Taskbar. In Windows 11, Microsoft centered the Taskbar and the Start Menu on the screen. This makes it look a bit more like Mac operating system with the rounded corners and pastel colors.. You can still move it back to the left if you want.
Android apps will be coming to Windows 11 and installable from within the new Microsoft Store via the Amazon Appstore. The other new features are better virtual desktop support, Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar, easier transitions from laptop only to connecting external monitors, Widgets, improved touchscreen / tablet support.

The key question to consider is should you upgrade to Windows 11? My personal choice is "not yet". There is nothing really earth shattering in my opinion and these are minor improvements for now. I would rather err on the side of caution until they work out all the inevitable bugs / security issues. I recommend waiting 1 full year after launch date (Was Oct. 5th, 2021) so they can patch the glitches / security vulnerabilities that WILL show up.
